Project ZnSe alternative method
HANDOUT: ZnSe Thin Film Preparation by SILAR (Na2SeSO3 Route)
Department Nano Lab (MPTE) • Student Protocol • Strict Procedure (100 mL bath scale)
1. Aim
To deposit ZnSe nanostructured thin films on glass substrates using the SILAR technique, employing sodium selenosulfate (Na2SeSO3) as the selenium source.
2. Safety (Mandatory)
- Wear lab coat + nitrile gloves + goggles.
- Heating steps: use hot plate; avoid splashing.
- Collect all selenium-containing residues in a labeled heavy-metal waste bottle.
3. Chemicals & Exact Quantities (100 mL Each Bath)
3.1 Cationic Bath: 0.05 M ZnCl2 (100 mL)
| Reagent | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ZnCl2 (anhydrous) | 0.681 g | Dissolve in DI water and make up to 100 mL |
| Aqueous ammonia (NH3) | 0.5–2.0 mL (typical) | Add dropwise to adjust pH to 9.0–9.5; stop when solution stays clear |
Preparation steps
- Add ~70 mL DI water in a beaker.
- Add 0.681 g ZnCl2; stir until fully dissolved.
- Add NH3 dropwise to reach pH 9.0–9.5. (Do not over-add.)
- Make volume to 100 mL in a measuring cylinder.
- Label: “Zn²⁺ Bath: 0.05 M ZnCl₂, pH 9–9.5, Date”
Important: If the Zn bath turns milky/turbid, pH is too high. Prepare fresh and adjust pH more carefully.
3.2 Anionic Bath: 0.05 M Na2SeSO3 (100 mL)
Target moles = 0.05 mol/L × 0.1 L = 0.005 mol
| Reagent | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium powder (Se) | 0.395 g | Provides 0.005 mol Se |
| Sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) | 1.00 g (recommended) 0.630 g (minimum stoichiometric) |
Higher amount helps complete Se dissolution |
| DI water | To 100 mL | Heat required during preparation |
Preparation steps (Heating required)
- Add ~70 mL DI water to a beaker.
- Dissolve Na2SO3 (1.00 g) completely.
- Add 0.395 g Se powder slowly with stirring.
- Heat to 85–90 °C and stir for 60–90 min.
- Continue until solution becomes clear/pale (no visible red Se).
- Cool to room temperature and make up to 100 mL.
- Label: “Na2SeSO3 Bath: 0.05 M, Date”
Storage: Prefer fresh. If stored, use within 48–72 hours (amber bottle).
4. Substrate Cleaning (Do Not Skip)
- Wash glass slide with detergent + water (2–3 min rubbing).
- Rinse thoroughly with DI water.
- Sonicate in acetone for 10 min.
- Sonicate in IPA (2-propanol) for 10 min.
- Rinse with DI water; air dry; handle only at edges.
Clean check: DI water should spread uniformly as a film (no beading).
5. SILAR Deposition (Starting Standard Parameters)
5.1 One SILAR Cycle (Fixed)
| Step | Action | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dip in Zn²⁺ bath (0.05 M ZnCl₂, pH 9–9.5) | 20 s |
| 2 | Rinse in DI water (Rinse Beaker 1) | 20 s |
| 3 | Dip in Na₂SeSO₃ bath (0.05 M) | 20 s |
| 4 | Rinse in DI water (Rinse Beaker 2) | 20 s |
| 5 | Dry in hot chamber | 60 s @ 60–80 °C |
5.2 Number of Cycles (Prepare 3 Samples)
- ZnSe-20 = 20 cycles
- ZnSe-30 = 30 cycles (recommended for Z-scan)
- ZnSe-40 = 40 cycles (only if no cracking)
Label each substrate: sample ID + date on the backside.
6. Post-Deposition Drying & Annealing (Mandatory)
- Dry at 80 °C for 30 min.
- Anneal at 250 °C for 60 min.
If ordinary microscope glass is used and you suspect warping, start with 200 °C for 60 min. Ramp temperature gradually to avoid film cracking.
7. Same-Day Quality Checks
- Visual: uniform film without patchy regions.
- Adhesion: gentle tissue wipe at corner; film should not peel.
- Thickness (Profilometer): target 200–600 nm for Z-scan suitability.
- UV–Vis: record absorbance spectrum for bandgap estimation (Tauc plot later).
8. Characterization Plan (Thesis)
- UV–Vis–NIR: band gap, absorption edge.
- PL (Fluorescence): defect emission / recombination behaviour.
- Profilometer: thickness (required for optical/nonlinear calculations).
- Photoconductivity / Source meter: I–V (dark vs light).
- CLIF SEM + XRD: morphology + phase confirmation.
- Z-scan: extract nonlinear parameters (β, n2, χ(3)).
9. Troubleshooting (Quick)
- Patchy film: substrate not clean → repeat cleaning.
- Powdery/weak adhesion: slightly reduce Zn bath pH (towards 8.5–9.0) or reduce dip time to 15 s.
- Cracks after anneal: reduce cycles (20–30), use slow heating ramp.
- Weak ZnSe formation: prepare fresh Na₂SeSO₃; ensure Se fully dissolves during heating.
